The Yogi and the Scorpion

Lesson: Compassion is a yogi’s nature

An old yogi was meditating beside a river when he saw a scorpion struggling in the water. He reached in and lifted it out, but the scorpion stung him.

A passerby laughed and said,
“Why save it when it hurts you?”

The yogi smiled and said,
“The scorpion’s nature is to sting, but my nature is to help. Should I abandon my nature because it acts on its own?”

The man bowed in understanding. A yogi does not act based on how others treat them—they act from their own higher nature.
